Hapaks legomenon

Hapaks legomenon (gr., „rzecz raz powiedziana) słowo, wyrażenie, forma stylistyczna, która występuje tylko jeden raz w danym dokumencie (czy w całej twórczości pisarza) lub jest poświadczona jednym cytatem.

Na przykład w Piśmie Świętym takich wyrazów jest ponad tysiąc, wiele z nich o niejasnym znaczeniu. Stąd też wyrażenia te są szczególnie trudne do przetłumaczenia.

W Księdze Hioba „hapax legomenon” odnosi się do słów lub wyrażeń, które pojawiają się tylko raz w całym tekście księgi, czasami kilka razy tylko w tej Księdze. Te słowa są trudne do przetłumaczenia z powodu ich unikalności i stanowią wyzwanie dla językoznawców i badaczy Biblii.  W tekście Księgi Hioba pojawia się ponad 100 unikalnych słów, odzwierciedlających archaiczny słownictwo i styl filozoficzny.

Czym jest hapaks legomenon?

Hapaks legomenon w biblijnym języku hebrajskim odnosi się do słowa, które pojawia się tylko raz w całej Biblii hebrajskiej. Nie są to jedynie rzadkie formy, ale całkowicie unikatowe hasła leksykalne, które nie powtarzają się w żadnym innym wersecie.

Przykłady: שְׁפִיפֹן (Rdz 49,17) – „żmija” lub „wąż”. Poetycki termin zoologiczny, który nie występuje nigdzie indziej. קִפֹּד (Iz 34,11) – Prawdopodobnie stworzenie zamieszkujące pustynię, często tłumaczone jako „jeż” lub „jeżozwierz”. חָרְסָם (Hi 6:6) – Tradycyjnie interpretowane jako „białko jaja”, choć dokładne znaczenie jest przedmiotem dyskusji. זַלְעָפָה (Psalm 11:6) – Zwykle tłumaczone jako „palący wiatr” lub „płonąca burza”.

Formy sporne, niepewne lub unikalne w kontekście:   פְּרָזוֹן (Sędziowie 5:7) – Prawdopodobnie pochodzi od פְּרָזִי („mieszkaniec wsi”), ale jego forma jest unikalna i poetycka.   מִדְבַּר (Job 39:8) – Można odczytać jako czasownik hapaks oznaczający „mówić”, ale często interpretowany jest jako rzeczownik pospolity „pustkowie”. תַּרְשִׁישׁ – Często występuje jako nazwa miejsca (Ezechiel 27:12), ale raz użyty jako kamień szlachetny, co powoduje semantyczne zamieszanie, choć technicznie nie jest to czysty hapaks.
